Program Information

Now more than ever, teachers need to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions that new literacies in the classroom require.  The Media and Digital Literacy Certificate is for teachers and educators who want to learn how to implement new literacy practices in their school community, regardless of grade level or content area.

This one year, online sequence of four courses begins each summer. Students complete the certificate in the spring, and may be eligible to apply their coursework toward the Master of Education in Language and Literacy.

Goals

Learn to:

  • Teach more effectively in a 1:1 environment
  • Consume and produce digital media in all content areas
  • Create digital content for your classes
  • Be a tech leader in your school and community

Potential Outcomes:

  • Prepare technology integrated lessons
  • Produce a variety of digital media for your students (videos, memes, podcasts, etc.)
  • Develop a line of inquiry, curate resources, and create a multimedia presentation
  • Develop a technology integrated advocacy project

Application Requirements

  • Current graduate students adding the certificate to their in-progress master's degree apply here.
  • New applicants must complete the Graduate School's ApplyWeb application and pay the $100 application fee.
  • Within the application you will be prompted to upload an unofficial transcript from each institution attended.
  • Additional application materials for all applicants are specified below. Applications will not be forwarded to the department for review until all required materials have been received by the Graduate School.
  • International Applicants: Please review the requirements for Degree Equivalency and English Language Proficiency. This program is delivered online and may not meet student VISA requirements.

Additional Application Requirement

  • A brief (250 words or less) statement describing your current position in teaching/education and your goals or interest in completing the certificate.

Financial Information

This certificate program is not eligible for federal student aid, but there are other funding options you may want to explore. If, however, these classes are taken in conjunction with the requirements for an MA or MS degree program, federal student aid may be applied toward your tuition costs.
