Speech-Language Pathology (Communication Sciences and Disorders)
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at Western Washington University offers a master’s degree program in speech-language pathology that is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA).
Graduate students complete a two year course of study that includes academic classes as well as clinical practica. A master's degree is the entry level degree for practicing as a speech-language pathologist. The rigorous academic coursework and rich clinical experiences at WWU prepare our graduate students for meeting ASHA clinical certification standards and Washington State licensure and professional certification requirements.
The objectives of the program in Speech-Language Pathology are to prepare competent entry-level professionals in speech-language pathology and to prepare students for advanced study at the PhD level. The program includes an internship taken after other academic and clinical requirements have been completed.
Speech-language pathology is a discipline which has developed out of a concern for people with communication disorders. Preparation leading to a degree in communication sciences and disorders includes a wide range of course work and a variety of clinical practicum opportunities working with the infant through geriatric populations.
Students who intend to seek employment in this profession, whether in a public school, clinic, rehabilitation center or hospital setting, are advised that certification/licensure at the state and/or national levels is required. Out-of-state students should recognize that other requirements may exist for employment in different geographic locations.

Additional Application Requirements
Please note: A degree in “Speech Science” or “Linguistics” is not an equivalent degree. If you do not have a background in speech pathology/audiology or communication disorders, contact the Program Adviser immediately to determine your eligibility. Applicants who have an undergraduate degree in another discipline may meet this admission requirement by completing pre-requisite undergraduate coursework through WWU's Post-Baccalaureate Program.
The CSD department suggests that at least 2 of the 3 letters of reference be from professors who can speak to your academic skills.
- A baccalaureate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders/Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from an accredited U.S. college or university, or an equivalent degree from a foreign university, completed within the past 5 years
- Three (3) Letters of Reference
- 1 page resume, outlining educational background, awards, relevant employment and volunteer experiences
- Statement of Purpose: The Department of CSD at Western has a responsibility to the public that its graduates can become fully competent and caring speech‐language pathologists, capable of doing benefit and not harm. We particularly value applicants who can demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, curiosity, maturity, self‐motivation, dedication to the profession, and established strategies for managing stress. Within this context, submit a one page statement describing your academic experiences, professional experiences, and personal qualities that make you a strong candidate for graduate training in speech‐language pathology. In addition, discuss your future plans for your professional career. Please be aware that your statement will be read by a review committee who will not only evaluate you based on the content of your answer, but also on your writing ability (e.g., clarity, organization, writing mechanics).
